Kerrang! Interview with Josh Farro

What’s your life been like since posting your exit statement?
“It’s been nice to unwind! There’s been drama, but some of that’s inevitable. But other than that, it’s been great. Zac and I are starting a new chapter in our lives. I’m trying to focus on the future and not the past.”

Were you ready for the drama your departure caused?
“Yeah, I was prepared for it. We weren’t talking to any of the rest of the guys anyway. I just wanted to share our side of the story in the statement. I didn’t say anything bad about them; I made sure it was very factual. I was starting the facts. I’ll admit the statement was based on emotion. Fans were like, ‘Why didn’t they say anything?’, and they wanted to know why we left. I was like, ‘If they want the truth, I’ll give them the truth’. I just feel that we, as band members, never got to vocalise our side of the story. It was all about Hayley.”

After 2009’s Brand New Eyes was released, Hayley said the band seemed stronger than ever. What changed?
“We were going through a very hard time writing the record. We gave up fighting Hayley, we just went with it. In her mind, that was the band being better than ever. To me, it was making it worse because Zac and I were holding everything inside and shoving things under the carpet.”

Was it hard being in the band with Hayley after you stopped dating?
“For a while. It was weird more than anything. We were good friends before that and people change. We were becoming more and more distant.

Do you think things were doomed after that?
”(pause) Yeah, I would say so. That’s when it all started to fall apart in my mind. It was the great divide.”

Have you spoken to any of your former bandmates since December?
“No, I don’t think that’ll happen for a while. I hope one day we can reconcile, but I really don’t care to be in some war with them. Whatever.”

Do you miss Paramore?
“It’s still fresh, but I don’t think I miss it at all. I don’t miss it one bit. That’s just being completely honest.”

So when did you begin working on Novel American?
“Three years ago, Zac and I met up with Ryan [Clark, bass] and Van [Beasley, vocals] and jammed for fun. They were our friends from high school. I got together with Ryan and Van again last summer. I thought it’d be cool to do something with them, but obviously we were in Paramore. Once we stepped away, Zac started doing his side-project Half Noise and I didn’t think I wanted to be in a band. But then I called the guys and rediscovered my love for music and being in a band.”

Was forming a new band always in the back of your mind?
“No, actually. We jammed a couple of times and that was it, I don’t know why I didn’t think it was a possibility to do more.”

Why wasn’t Zac involved in the first place?

“He was having fun doing his new band Half Noise. Somehow, I don’t really know how it played out, but Van, Ryan and Tyler [Ward, original NA drummer] had been in a band called Cecil Adora, so I kind of assumed they came as a package, so I just asked them all to hang out and write. It just went from there. And Zac was cool with it because he was having fun doing Half Noise. Just a few weeks ago, Tyler left because he has a baby on the way, which is a good thing because Zac could be in the band. So that’s kinda how it all started.”

Will Paramore fans like your new band?
“I think there are gonna be a few that will not like it just because they’re mad about the Paramore thing and we can’t change that. I think the plan right now is to record a five-song EP, just to get kids hyped and excited. If they have an open mind, I think they’ll like it.

You sound like you’re relishing this new chapter in your life.
“Yeah, we’re taking it a day at a time. I’ve learned that it is so important to be in a band with other members who share the same vision and desire the same goals as you. It’s very liberating. It’s not like we’re just writing songs to get on the radio and sell millions of records, we’re just writing what we love and what sounds good, and we’re loving it.”
